You are the voice of the pavilion

Saturday was our last chance to listen for the voice of the De La Warr - as our participatory project came to an end. Inspired by Andy Warhol's love affair with the trusty tape-recorder he called 'his wife' - visitors took pen and paper around the building with them, to document the sounds of the building - becoming a human tape recorder, for 15 minutes. The echoes, the silences the conversations and the tread of feet provide the backdrop for what they saw and what they heard. Have a last listen to the voice of the pavilion - it's the voice of every visitor - so it's your voice too.

Paul:

steam blowing cutter tapping
distant engines laughter echoing
half conversations shoes shuffling
feet stepping whispers and murmurs
doors opening and doors closing
chairs sliding phones ringing
Bob whistling cafe musicing

Roehamster:

Voices are mingled, confused and co-mingled; an oasis of coherent conversation sits around a table on the top floor. Isolated snippets of conversation on genuine and antique 'cassette tape recorders' lie and wait for you to slip on headphones, rewind, fast forward, play, eject and stop.

The names of the interviewees mean nothing; once-beautiful, once-intimates of Warhol umm and err as a starstruck interviewer simpers.

Elsewhere, the din and thrum is never ending.

Bobby America says goodbye to Bexhill

The final session of Radio Free Warhol presenter (and Andy Warhol's Factory survivor) Bobby America, reminiscing about the 80's and talking about Warhol the man and his work with visitors to "Warhol is Here".

more fun at the 'Factory'

Although it was a rather bleak January afternoon, the DLWP was pretty busy and we had plenty of eager folks ready to dress up and pose as one of Andy Warhol's many illustrious and glamourous friends and aquaintances for a fabulous photo opportunity.

"People ask me everywhere is that really all your hair ? "

All ears...

We're back again at the De La Warr today for Part 3 of our participatory project - recording the voice of the Pavilion through the sounds of what's happening here during the Warhol Is Here exhibition. With the sound of Christmas carols echoing through the building, this session has been mellow and definitely festive. Here's what we heard...

Vibrations in essence, resonate around and through me,
Music dances, filling the moments between chatter,
Humming creeks split the gentle motion of the sea,
Voice over voice, try to please, try to flatter,
Warhol on black, speaks in dark tone,
As the door slams behind him on a time that is gone,
Broken clicks of heels, as they stride cross the floor,
Out onto the sea and the sound of the shore.
