Welcome To Bexhill

Young artists and their families joined us for a special Lift The Lid session this Sunday - as we made a giant model of Bexhill.

We made the De La Warr Pavilion itself, complete with a seagull on the roof!

Accrington Park - with flowers, ponds, ducks, tadpoles ...

Swings ...

... and trees with singing birds in them.

And we made...

Roads and railway tracks...

Shops...

Railways and trains...

And police stations and fire stations and schools and hospitals.

Finally we made the Bexhill sea and the things we find in it...

Everything from Sailing Boats...

...to whales!

Lift The Lid was hosted this month by DLWP artist Wendy Ann Greenhalgh. Thanks to volunteers Ben and Jehan and all the amazing young architects, town planners, engineers and artists who took part. Lift The Lid sessions happen the first Sunday of every month from 2-5pm. Join us for the next one!

Last day of Warhol

A muted winter sun shone over the last busy day of the Warhol season. The whole place was very busy with people busily fitting in a last look at this great exhibition before it closes. Our fantasy dressing up sessions, where people can come along and try on a few strange wigs, mustaches or tiaras and daydream about hanging out with all the fabulous people at the Factory, are now at an end. We had a good selection of men, women, children, singly or in big groups joining in the fun and exploring their party personas.

The Voice of The Pavilion

You are the voice of the pavilion

Saturday was our last chance to listen for the voice of the De La Warr - as our participatory project came to an end. Inspired by Andy Warhol's love affair with the trusty tape-recorder he called 'his wife' - visitors took pen and paper around the building with them, to document the sounds of the building - becoming a human tape recorder, for 15 minutes. The echoes, the silences the conversations and the tread of feet provide the backdrop for what they saw and what they heard. Have a last listen to the voice of the pavilion - it's the voice of every visitor - so it's your voice too.

Paul:

distant engines laughter echoing
half conversations shoes shuffling
feet stepping whispers and murmurs
doors opening and doors closing
chairs sliding phones ringing
Bob whistling cafe musicing

Roehamster:

Voices are mingled, confused and co-mingled; an oasis of coherent conversation sits around a table on the top floor. Isolated snippets of conversation on genuine and antique 'cassette tape recorders' lie and wait for you to slip on headphones, rewind, fast forward, play, eject and stop.

The names of the interviewees mean nothing; once-beautiful, once-intimates of Warhol umm and err as a starstruck interviewer simpers.

Elsewhere, the din and thrum is never ending.

And the last word goes to four year old - Orla.

Bobby America says goodbye to Bexhill

The final session of Radio Free Warhol presenter (and Andy Warhol's Factory survivor) Bobby America, reminiscing about the 80's and talking about Warhol the man and his work with visitors to "Warhol is Here".

Although it was a rather bleak January afternoon, the DLWP was pretty busy and we had plenty of eager folks ready to dress up and pose as one of Andy Warhol's many illustrious and glamourous friends and aquaintances for a fabulous photo opportunity.
